Response dated 18 August 2026

An Official Information Act request emailed to the Ministry of Justice on 21 July 2026 asked for correspondence and meeting records between Ministry personnel and Labour MPs or Labour parliamentary staff about specified firearms matters, and for correspondence and meeting records with Derek Cheng about firearms or firearms regulation. The request covered the period from 5 December 2023 to the date it was received. The Ministry replied on 18 August 2026 (OIA 134530).

Parts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 were refused under section 18(e) because the requested information does not exist. For part 5, the Ministry released copies of correspondence previously provided to Derek Cheng in the OIA 115916 pack. Some information was withheld under section 9(2)(a) to protect privacy, and some material was refused under section 18(d) because it is publicly available on the Ministry website. The requester's personal details were withheld in the public release.
