COLFO and Gun City are piloting open days at 15 clubs this summer. New Zealand is losing around 500 licensed firearm owners a month. Hosting a public day on the range is how we start turning that around.
New Zealand is losing around 500 licensed firearm owners a month. Getting members is hard for local clubs, and that loss adds up. To turn it around we need to start bringing new shooters into the sport.
This summer COLFO is launching a pilot programme, Try Shooting This Summer, to get new people onto ranges and try shooting. We have partnered with Gun City to back clubs that put their hands up to host.
That protects us in three ways.
A stronger voice
Growing the number of licensed firearm owners means more of a voice when it comes to voting, and more of a voice when it comes to influencing policy.
People who have actually been on a range
Even if someone never gets a firearms licence, a decent day on a club range means they are more likely to be educated when the media or anti-gun politicians try to push untrue narratives about our community.
Clubs that can keep the lights on
Clubs that host can recruit locally. That is how ranges and clubrooms in their community stay standing.
How the pilot works
Gun City will provide .22LR and .223 ammunition to 15 clubs that host an open day on their range this summer. COLFO will design the digital ads and run those campaigns. Your club handles the day on the ground.
Clubs pay a minimum of $50 a week for that advertising. COLFO does not take any of it. It all goes to promoting your open day.
We have capped it at 15 clubs so we can give each one a proper shot. 11 slots are still open. If it works, it grows next year.
